An introduction to the Learning Cluster Design Model through books, whitepapers and more

Designing For Modern Learning: Beyond ADDIE and SAM

Book

Published by ATD, this book describes the fundamental shift that has occurred in the nature of L&D’s role as a result of the digital revolution and introduces our new five-step model: the Owens-Kadakia Learning Cluster Design Model (OK-LCD Model).

In each chapter, the authors share stories of business leaders, L&D professionals, and learners who have successfully adopted the OK-LCD Model, detailing how they altered organizational mindsets to meet the needs of modern learners and their organizations. Included are how-to features, tools, tips, and real-life “in practice” sections.

“The OK-LCD model is exactly what I need – a simple, comprehensive, research-based compass to help my team navigate the complexity we are currently facing in learning design. In today’s remote-first working environment, we have loads of programs to redesign and even more to build. “Design for Modern Learning” aligns us all to a fresh, simple framework and a new, much-needed language so we can move swiftly and confidently. Instead of continuing to talk about how things need to change on many, many fronts, this book will enable my team to move into action!”

Building a Social Learning Community

Whitepaper

Once the face-to-face experience ends, most learning professionals
check off the proverbial “social learning” box, but modern learning
doesn’t stop at the end of an event. In fact, social learning should be
occurring before, during, and after a formalized social training event,
and more specifically, in the modern learners’ moment of need,
which are often unplanned and unintentional. While many of today’s
social learning experiences are occurring informally outside of the
classroom, in order to ensure truly transformative learning, modern
Learning & Development professionals should grow the capability to
intentionally build social learning-centered experiences.

Instructional Design in a Digital Age: A New Model is Taking Hold

Journal Article, Springer

Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing

For over fifty years, instructional design and development models for training have centered around the goal of designing one deliverable given a learning challenge. Though learning is becoming more bite-sized, these bits are often considered accessories or in support of a formal program like a course or class. The Learning Cluster Design model, in use since 2016, provides an approach that re-examines traditional assumptions and evolves L&D for today’s digitally-enabled culture.

In this paper, we will share how L&D practitioners and professionals are using the model, what is working, and what is challenging. Overall, our study showed a 77% Net Promoter Score for the LCD model, indicating a high degree of loyalty and positive referral, by a wide range of L&D professionals, representing a vari-ety of roles, industries, and experience levels. We share three different case stud-ies of the model: an internal L&D “solo” practitioner, a non-L&D use case, and an L&D practitioner layering in LCD model. The study showed that over half of the respondents are making the LCD model a norm.
